Its always such an honour when people ask me to paint a picture for them. I realise that it must be scary as the outcome is always a little unknown. Therefore I ask many questions in advanced to get a really good understanding of your expectations, your reasons for the picture and emotions behind it. The more I know, the more I feel connected, which will be reflected in the painting.

Jemmy Hirst Mural - approx. 100 x 240 cm
The new owners of the Jemmy Hirst - Rose and Crown PUB in Rawcliffe had found this 100 year of mug while they were decorating the place. The mug was a visual representation of Jemmy Hirst, an famous historic eccentric figure of Rawcliffe. John and Jill thought it would be nice to convert this into a lasting mural, and ask me to paint it for them. Together we agreed upon a triptych, painted on plywood. To give the mural a more modern feel and warmth, we decided to let the wood show through the painting. I tried to stay as close to the original drawings but added various blues to create depth and contrast. It reminds me a little of Dutch Delfs Blue, which is quite appropriate for the area as the Dutch were quite influential in the past, and local links to Vermuijden and the Dutch Canal are testament to that. John and Jill loved the end result as did their customers and the mural was revealed with bubbles and a fabulous curry! I wish it was my idea, but no it was my friend! It was her parents wedding anniversary. Their surname 'Czajkowski' is translated in English as 'Lapwing', hence she thought it would be nice to give them a painting of a lapwing and asked me to make one in the style of my other animals. Lapwings live and breed in grasslands but like the water too So - also in Dutch they are called 'Kievit'. I remembered the boat trips I did with my dad as a child, spotting different birds along the water and in the fields. The lapwing has such a beautiful quiff, if you can call it that way. I tried to enhance the colours on their wings which are very vivid in some lights.
Knowing that my friend liked my busy backgrounds, I had to make sure the bird had enough 'body' to stand out from it. Using heavy body acrylic paint and palette knifes I tried to create thick structured feathers in a loose format. After the approval of my friend, I varnished the painting to ensure the colours won't fade over time. The paints that I use are of professional quality and therefore don't fade over time but the varnish gives it an extra layer of protection against moist and dust too.
I was very pleased to hear that the parents loved the picture and it hangs in a prominent place in their living room.

A picture can say a 1000 words! These days with our smart phones and digital cameras its easy to make a nice picture. But sometimes its hard to capture the right light, the right atmosphere, the mystic of the moment. Nowadays our cameras and phones are overloaded with smart software who automatically correct the scene. Great, but not always. I made these pictures of my family on one our long beach walks - and beach bike rides! I couldn't get the lighting right with the camera, but luckily I could with the brush! My sister-in-law loved the photograph of the boys on the bikes and asked if I could paint it for her.

How does it work?
Based on our discussion I can give you a quote or agree a budget. I would ask 50% deposit to cover the initial materials and part of the labour. When I feel its finished, I will send you an image of the picture of if you are local you can come and have a look. At that stage I can still do a few tweaks it that was necessary. Once you are happy I will ensure the painting is varnished to protect it against dirt and fading. The paints I use are of high quality and hardly fade but the varnish protects it even more.Why not give me a ring to discuss your project - no obligations!

Prize winning Buck - Arthur
This handsome fellow, is the prize winning buck called Arthur and fathered all her goats. Being in the prime of his life, Arthur was moving on to another farm. The owners asked me to paint him to remember him by. We did an extensive photoshoot and together we selected the image, to base the painting on. I hope Arthur will be on their walls for years to come.
